Blessed Sacrament Church
Blessed Sacrament Parish was established at 29 Palms in 1940 by Bishop Charles Buddy. The first church building was at one time a store known as the Ben Smith building, which was purchased by Bishop Buddy of San Diego in March, 1943, and later remodeled into a beautiful little church and rectory. In August, 1944 a steeple was presented to the church by the Navy through arrangements made by Lt. William L. Calhoun, officer in charge of the local Naval Auxiliary Air Station (the predecessor of the Marine Corps Base).
A church building fund had been created by Father H.J. Hahn, the first pastor and in 1948 a midnight mass was celebrated in a newly constructed church which was designed by Claude Powell of Palm Springs. Walter Berg of 29 Palms was the general contractor. Pastor at that time was Father Patrick J. O'Dowd who worked with great diligence to develop the parish and school. Succeeding pastors have left their marks on this vibrant parish.
